The Network

The International Network of Protagonist Childhoods: migration, art and education was created in 2022 and aims to develop theoretical and methodological tools that enable the integration and effective reception of immigrant and refugee children and young people in Brazilian schools. It is based at the University of Brasília and is present in thirteen Brazilian states and seven other countries (Portugal, Spain, Mozambique, Colombia, Venezuela, France and United States). The Network is made up of an interdisciplinary team of teachers and students from primary and higher education, immigrant and refugee children and families, professionals working in NGOs, and members of civil society.

Here you will find information and materials about the project “Protagonist Childhoods: A Collaborative Proposal for Creating Public Policies for the Integration of Immigrant and Refugee Children in Brazilian Schools,” which has received funding from CNPq/MCTI/FNDCT Notice No. 40/2022 PRÓ-HUMANIDADES, Program for Scientific and Technological Development in Humanities. One of the distinguishing features of the approach is that it recognizes the role of children in migratory processes by listening to their narratives and promoting their knowledge through artistic languages.

The Network operates on three methodological fronts:

Gathering bibliographic, statistical, and ethnographic data to provide an overview of the current inclusion of immigrant and refugee children in Brazilian schools.

Listening and co-creation processes with the children through artistic and ethnographic practices, emphasizing their protagonism.

Ongoing teacher training, through workshops designed and offered in partnership with professionals who work in multicultural classrooms in different regions of the country.
